Post-Wrestlemania 27 Thoughts

By:  Timdogg

I’m finally back on my laptop so I can recount the entire evening of Wrestlemania 27 from Atlanta, GA.  My brother, another friend and I arrived at the Georgia Dome around 3:30pm.  I actually ran into an old college friend outside the arena who came all the way from Iowa to see the show.  I guess Wrestlemania really is the “Super Bowl” of professional wrestling.

Our section had some lively fans.  A lot of pre-show dueling chants helped the time go by.  One young boy dressed in John Cena gear looked around in disbelief when the “Cena Sucks!!” chants started.  One mother had to sit between her two sons who were in a shouting match over their favorite wrestlers.  The couple sitting behind us were from Clemson, SC and the wife wanted to make sure we weren’t going to be sitting on our hands the entire show.  I was lucky enough to have her screaming behind me the entire show.

While I’m discussing fans in our section, I need to rant on the guy sitting right next to me.  Dude seemed to be there with another friend of his.  All they did the entire show was drink beer after beer.  No cheering, no emotional reactions, nothing!  They didn’t even stand much through the show.  I’m thinking if all he is going to do is sit, drink beer, chew tobacco and spit it into his empty beer bottle he could have stayed home.

Overall I enjoyed the show live.  I’ve read that it didn’t come across that great on TV and I can see why.  The show lacked those “Wrestlemania Moments”.  My favorite matches were ADR/Edge, Cody Rhodes/Mysterio, and CM Punk/Orton.  Also the last 5 minutes of HHH/Undertaker and Lawler/Cole were enjoyable.  I feel Lawler/Cole went on way too long.  Just like the Bret Hart/Vince McMahon match from last year.

During the first half of the show I read some people criticizing the crowd.  At first I agreed because besides our section it didn’t seem that the crowd was making much noise.  After giving it more thought, I believe if the product had been better the crowd would have made the appropriate noise.  Crowd was energetic at the beginning for The Rock and even through the first few matches.  Crowd was lost during the 8 man tag and Lawler/Cole matches.  Crowd seemed to be “pro” wrestling; as in they wanted to see more wrestling in the matches, not the sports entertainment stuff.

Final thoughts:  I’m glad I finally got to be in attendance for a Wrestlemania.  Was it the greatest show ever?  No, but the experience alone made up for that.  I will post videos later of some of the entrances and of the set.

Gripe with Marvel Comics Animated DVD releases

By:  Timdogg

Today Marvel Comics previewed cover art for Vols. 1 & 2 of Avengers:  Earth’s Mightiest Heroes DVD.  The release date is April 28.  I got excited because I thought it would be the full season one.  But upon further review, it’s only seven episodes on volume one, and six on volume two.

It drives me crazy when TV series release bits and pieces of a series. I first noticed this trend when Wolverine & The X-Men would release DVDs with only three or four episodes in them.  I guess the reasoning in this is to sell as many as possible, and in the end release the complete compilation.

And just like with Wolverine & The X-Men, the complete collection of Avengers:  Earth’s Mightiest Heroes better be available on blu-ray too.  If a show airs on a channel that is in HD then I should be able to purchase it in blu-ray also.  I’m looking at you Archer!

End of rant :)

The Fighter Review

By Timdogg

Since I do my fair share of watching newly released and older movies, I thought it would be a good idea to start putting my opinions and reviews online for all to see. Hopefully this will become a recurring theme on Kliq Nation that will branch out to other genres: wrestling, TV shows, music, etc.  And as always, feedback is greatly appreciated. If there is something you’d like discussed, let us know.

The Fighter is based on the true story of Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), a boxer from Lowell, MA.  His older brother, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), is a local legend for having boxed Sugar Ray Leonard on HBO. Micky’s career hasn’t been a great one.  Dicky is his trainer and their mother is the manager.  After losing a match against a fighter he never should have fought, Micky starts to question whether boxing is for him or not.  What makes it humorous is they describe him as black/German and having been sitting on his butt for six months. Once he takes his warmup robe off the dude is JACKED! Good times.

Micky soon starts dating Charlene, who suggests Micky dump the family and venture off on a career without them.  Not until after Dicky goes to jail does Micky decide to start his career post-family interference.  One of his opponents, Alonso Sanchez, stood out in my mind because when his entrance music hit, I immediately thought of WWE superstar Alberto Del Rio.  Wrestling fans reading this will know what I mean.

What surprised me was there really wasn’t much tension between Micky and Dicky, once Dicky was released from jail.  Dicky got upset when he found out Micky hired a new trainer and management, but it was all resolved a little too easily in my book. Typically there would be a physical confrontation between the two main protagonists. Not in The Fighter though.  Dicky makes a truce with Charlene and stops associating with his drug-abusing friends.  With family and friends now in his corner, Micky is able to capture a world title.

Also the acting was done nicely in the film.  Christian Bale as Dicky has more to work with, since Dicky is a drug user and has the Muhammed Ali-type shakes from too many blows to the head.

My final grade for The Fighter would be B-.  Definitely entertaining, ending just felt flat to me.

NBA All Star Weekend Recap

By:  Timdogg

This weekend the NBA concluded its All Star festivities.  On Saturday they held the Celebrity All Star game and the Rookies vs Sophomore game.  For the second year in a row, the Rookies came out victorious. John Wall won MVP with 20+ assists.

Saturday night Steph Curry won the Skills Competition, James Jones won the 3 Point Shoot, and Blake Griffin won the Slam Dunk Contest.

My quick thoughts on preliminary events:  no one pays attention to the celebrity game; Rookies vs Sophomore game is somewhat interesting every year; Skills Competition is not needed but an extra event to showcase “skills” to the fans doesn’t hurt anything; 3 Point Shootout is always my favorite competition to watch; and even though year after year people try to write off the Dunk Contest, it keeps delivering the drama.

Finally, we ended Sunday night with the actual All Star game.  The West team came out on top, with Kobe Bryant winning the game’s MVP (his career fourth, putting him in second place all time).  LeBron James lead the East team back in the final minutes, even finishing the game with the second triple-double ever recorded in an All Star game.

Was there anything that stood out to you during the weekend, besides Kanye West’s tight red leather pants or Shaq sitting courtside during Saturday night’s events with Hoopz from Flava Flav’s dating reality show?

Wrestlemania 27 - The Rock Announced as Guest Host

By:  Timdogg

Right before WWE Monday Night RAW went off the air tonight, they announced who would be the guest host for Wrestlemania 27 in Atlanta, GA.  As the lights dimmed and the ominous music stopped playing, the arena speakers blasted the recognizable catchphrase “Do you smell what The Rock is cooking?”  And indeed, everyone in attendance live in Anaheim, CA and the millions of fans watching at home, could smell what The Rock was cooking!

The Rock entered the ring and gave a 20 minute promo thanking the fans for their continued support throughout the years.  The Rock also reminded us that its been seven years since he was last in WWE and verbally laid the smackdown on Michael Cole and The Miz.

However, The Rock saved the best for last, as he started ripping into John Cena.  The insults were flying, from mocking Cena’s “You can’t see me” taunt, to the numerous skittles-inspired merchandise t-shirts.

KLIQ Nation is overjoyed to be able to attend the most electrifying Wrestlemania in history live.  Will there be an actual The Rock vs John Cena matchup?  Will The Rock just be a special enforcer for one of the main event matches?  Guest referee perhaps? The possibilities are endless.  Let the speculation begin!

How would you like to see The Rock used at Wrestlemania?

Super Bowl Movie Trailers

By:  Timdogg

Ok KliqNation let’s get into it!  Forget about the Super Bowl game, and all the product commercials (Pepsi, Doritos, etc.).  Lets discuss the summer blockbuster trailers…

  • Fast Five - We got some extra footage that wasn’t seen in the original released trailer.  I thought Fast & Furious would be the end of the series, but when a franchise keeps making money, by God Hollywood will keep milking that cow till she tips over.
  • Transformers 3 - The 2nd installment did not leave the best impression, even though it pulled major cash at the box offices.  The CGI and action scenes shown in the trailer look great of course.  Its only a matter of whether the entire movie will live up to the hype.
  • Thor - What originally started as hesitation as to whether audiences would get behind the Norse God has been replaced my pure joy.  Thor looks like another hit by Marvel studios.  And lets give it up to Natalie Portman.  She made sure to stockpile movies before she takes a timeout for childbirth.
  • Captain America - All the previous movies had already released trailers before Super Bowl weekend.  This was our first chance to see footage from Captain America.  The audience even got to see Steve Rodgers, played by Chris Evans, pre- and post-Super Solider serum.  And if you pay close attention, there was a very brief shot of Red Skull, red-faced and all!

The only movie trailers I found to be missing were X-Men:  First Class and Green Lantern.  What Super Bowl movie trailer(s) did you enjoy the most?
